We propose a building that not only consists of a frame for displaying artefacts, but offers plenty inside and outside spaces for interaction and social dialogue.
The building appeares as a natural extension of the park, extending as a lanscaped surface. The street facade is lower than the one towards Wooded Island, in order to respect the similar scale of the urban frontages. The volume slightly grows towards it’s upper end that points towards Chicago’s downtown.
The main concept was to devide the main functions while still maintaining strong connections between these spaces. There are three main parts of the presidential library that are clearly well defined in our proposal: the museum, the public programming facilities and the educational facilities. Each of these have separate accesses but gravitate around the central lobby.
The galleries and the museum were designed to offer a smooth and enjoyable route that begins at the ground level and through a series of ramps and stairs ends at the last level. From here, the visitor can go back down into the lobby, access the educational spaces or go to the green roof.
The main educational facilities are placed at the last level in a solid volume that frames a view with the center of city. It can be accessed directly from the outside by using a elevator or from the inside. A special ramp goes around a „box of knoledge”, a solid volume made from books that shelters a multifunctional educational space.
